New Book features a life of a Woman/Immigrant/Pastor/Mother, reminding all of us that finding one’s identity is not just for teenagers. A fresh take on self-search, cultural differences, parenthood, family ties, and fitting in offered with humor and grace.

Kansas City, KS – July 11, 2011 – Teenage years? Quarter-life crisis? Mid-life crisis? How about an all-life crisis? Everyone has been through a series of transformations in life, some more defining than others. The newly released book by Lydia Istomina, “From Misery to Mystery: Story of a woman trapped in a man’s world,” reveals her personal story as she deals with various aspects of forced and voluntary change of life. The book is a collection of short stories that cover Lydia’s life in Russia and Kansas City, dealing with transition, cultural stereotypes and their frequent absurdities, about being a woman, a single mom, a wife, a foreigner, a pastor, and, simply, a human being trying to find herself.

Rev. Lydia Istomina is from Ekaterinburg, Russia where she started the first Methodist Church after 70 years of atheism. The very first woman pastor in Russia, Lydia started a trend. After a career in electrochemistry, and nine years as CEO of the Russian non-profit association Znanie (Knowledge), she built her church to nearly 1000 members. Lydia serves the First UMC in Raytown since 2004 after nine years of ministry in Kansas City, KS, where she served Grinter Chapel, Edwardsville, Central Avenue and Piper United Methodist Churches. Lydia Istomina is a graduate of St. Paul School of Theology. She is the author of “Bringing Hidden Things to Light: The Revival of Methodism in Russia” (Abingdon Press, 1996), multiple magazine and newspaper articles.
